Everyone has watched it, been amazed by it and thought it looked like fun. Lacrosse is a team sport that requires a fast pace and quick judgment. Each team consists of 10-12 players (10 men or 12 women) whom use netted sticks in order to control a rubber ball. The object of Lacrosse is to score by guiding the rubber ball into the opposing team’s goal.

Lacrosse is extremely popular in North America where it is the oldest known sport and still remains one of the fastest growing. Everyone from children to high school, college and professional Lacrosse athletes are at continuous play. Lacrosse is widely adored throughout the United States and it’s Northeastern region, but is perhaps most highly honored as Canada’s national summer sport. Fans in the Western United States need not worry, however, as the sport is steadily moving toward increased popularity in Colorado, California and Oregon. Even the sunshine state in the Southeastern United States is catching on, along with other southern states such as Tennessee and Texas.

Lacrosse is played on a competition field made of grass or artificial turf and with lacrosse goals on each end. Both men’s and women’s Lacrosse competitions are much the same with the main difference being the required protective gear. Women competitors are only required to wear protective eye gear whereas gentlemen athletes are required to wear a lacrosse pinnie, protective headgear, shoulder equipment and protective hand wear.

The sport of Lacrosse was originally invented by North Americans. Originally designed as a very intense, physical sport, players used their netted sticks to make contact with their opponents and then clearing the way for them to score a goal. In their earliest days, Lacrosse games often lasted for several days. Because the sport was so physical and encouraged contact between players, some competitors were seriously injured during the early years. However, contact is no longer permitted in Lacrosse as we know it today. The object of the game is to direct and guide the rubber ball to victory without harming, or inflicting pain upon, any players on the opposing team.

At least 73 people have been killed after a football pitch invasion in Egypt, officials say.

Clashes are said to have broken out as fans flooded the field seconds after the game in the northern coastal city of Port Said finished. Some reports say the death toll is as high as 73.

Hundreds more had been injured amid reports of rocks, bottles, flares and fireworks being thrown, health ministry officials told state TV.

It is being described as the worst disaster in the history of Egyptian football.
s details of the violence emerged, a football match in Cairo was called off in mourning and television footage showed sections of the stadium on fire. An announcer said the blazes had been started by fans angry over the cancellation.

A security official and a medic in Port Said said fans of the home team, Al Masry, swarmed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Al Ahly, Egypt’s top team.

They threw missiles at other fans and injured some players.

A medic at a morgue in the city said some of the dead were security officers. The causes of the deaths were not immediately known.

Some players were taken to a locker room for protection, a player, Sayed Hamdi, told state TV.

The country’s football federation has now “indefinitely delayed” all premier league matches.

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco will showcase a pair of teams that want a victory to finish their years on a positive note.

Both schools will have new head coaches next season. That hunger to get the win in this game should make this entertaining when Illinois of the Big Ten Conference takes on UCLA of the Pac-12.

These two teams have played 11 times, with UCLA holding a 6-5 advantage and a four-game win streak in the series. These two last met in Champaign in 2004, with UCLA posting a 35-17 win. The last Illinois victory came at home in 1964, 26-7.

Our latest Hunger Bowl odds show a spread of Illinois -2.5 and a total of 47 points.

Illinois

The Fighting Illini have been struggling for wins recently. After starting the season 6-0, Illinois did a 180, losing each of the last six contests, culminating in a 27-7 defeat at Minnesota, which cost Ron Zook his job and led to the hiring of Tim Beckman from Toledo. Illinois is 1-3 as a visitor, losing their last three road contests.

The Illini rate a respectable 21st in the country in scoring defense (20 points per game), allowing 292 yards per contest (159 passing, 133 with the run) while recording 36 sacks and enticing 20 turnovers – two of which were taken back for touchdowns (Tavon Wilson, fumble; Trulon Henry, interception).

Jonathan Brown leads the defense with 102 stops (24 more than any other player), adding six sacks, an interception, forced fumble and two recoveries, while Whitney Mercilus has 14.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles to go with 52 tackles and a fumble recovery. Henry and Terry Hawthorne each have two picks and Wilson and Ian Thomas have two fumble recoveries.

On offense, Illinois ranks just 91st in the nation in scoring (23 ppg) while compiling 358 yards per game (187 passing, 171 with the run). Jason Ford and Nathan Scheelhaase pace the offense with a combined 1,114 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 3.4 yards per carry.

Scheelhaase completes 64 percent of his throws for 1,971 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven picks. The offensive line has allowed 35 sacks. A.J. Jenkins is the top receiving threat with 84 grabs (59 more than any other player) for 1,196 yards and seven TDs.

UCLA

UCLA won the Pac-12 South and played in the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game, but Rick Neuheisel was canned and the program just announced the hiring of former NFL head coach Jim Mora. UCLA has lost three of its last four contests and were outscored in their two most recent games, 99-31, by USC (50-0) and Oregon (49-31). The Bruins were 1-6 as a visitor, but 5-3 in their home state.

UCLA rates 85th nationally in scoring offense (24 ppg) while gaining 389 yards per game (198 passing, 191 with the run). Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman anchor the offense with their running abilities, combining for 1,673 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry.

Kevin Prince connects on 57 percent of his attempts for 1,627 yards and 10 TDs with seven interceptions. The offensive line has allowed 24 sacks. Nelson Rosario leads the receivers with 61 receptions (27 more than anyone else) for 1,106 yards and four touchdowns.

The Bruins defense rates just 96th in the country in points allowed (32 ppg) and giving up 424 yards per game (233 through the air, 191 rushing) while recording 13 sacks and enticing 20 turnovers – one of which was returned for a touchdown (Pat Larimore, interception).

Larimore leads the unit with 81 stops, adding a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and fumble recovery, while Datone Jones has three sacks. Andrew Abbott has four interceptions and Sheldon Price has two forced fumbles.

The famous blue field in Boise, Idaho has not only been home to a highly ranked Boise State football team, but it has also been the venue of one of the northernmost NCAA bowl contests in recent seasons. This year, the second game in the 35-game bowl season will take place on the blue turf December 17 when Mid-American Conference second place finisher Ohio takes on WAC runner-up Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, formerly known as the Humanitarian Bowl.

This will be the first-ever game played between these two teams.

Our current Potato bowl odds show the Aggies at -2.5, while the over/under has been set at 57.5 points.

Ohio Bobcats

The Bobcats won the East Division of the Mid-American Conference, but had its five-game winning run snapped with a 23-20 defeat to Northern Illinois in the conference title contest. Ohio was 4-3 away from home this year, with three of the defeats by a total of seven points.

Ohio ranks 31st nationally in points given up (22 points per game), giving up 355 yards per game (229 through the air, 126 on the ground) while compiling 21 sacks and generating 26 turnovers.

Noah Keller leads the defense with 105 tackles (28 more than any other player) with three forced fumbles, two recoveries, a sack and an interception. Tremayne Scott has 3.5 sacks, 60 tackles and two forced fumbles, while Travis Carrie has four interceptions and 47 stops and Alphonso Lewis has three fumble recoveries and 31 stops.

Offensively, Ohio ranks 38th nationally in points scored (31 ppg) while recording 454 yards per game (251 via the pass, 203 rushing). Tyler Tettleton is a double-threat for the team, as he hits 64 percent of his attempts for 3,082 yards and 26 scores with 10 picks while also listing second in the run game with 627 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 4.2 yards per carry.

When Tettleton hands off, Donte Harden is his best ground threat with 939 rushing yards and two scores on 5.5 yards per tote. When Tettleton throws, his best target is LaVon Brazill with 66 receptions for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Utah State Aggies

The Aggies were rolling at the end of the season, winning their final five contests of the season to become bowl-eligible. An astounding nine of the program’s 12 contests were decided by seven points or less, including each of the five straight wins. USU was defeated by four at Auburn, three at BYU and one in OT to Colorado State. The team is 3-3 away from home but won its last three.

The Aggies list 21st in the nation in points (34 ppg) while totaling 459 yards per game (278 on the ground, 181 through the air). Robert Turbin anchors the running game with 1,416 yards and 19 touchdowns on 6.2 yards per tote, while Michael Smith has 713 yards and seven touchdowns on 7.0 yards per attempt.

Chuckie Keeton has connected on 61 percent of his passes for 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns with two picks. The offensive line has surrendered 17 sacks. Matt Austin leads the receiving corps with 34 catches for 465 yards and six touchdowns, while Stanley Morrison has 416 yards on 25 grabs with three touchdowns.

USU rates just 73rd nationally in points allowed (28 ppg), giving up 368 yards per game (240 passing, 128 rushing) while racking up 23 sacks and forcing 15 turnovers.

Bobby Wagner is the main figure on the defense with 140 stops almost 12 per contest, 49 more than any other player on the squad) with four sacks, two picks and a fumble recovery. Levi Koskan has 5.5 sacks, 26 tackles, a forced fumble and a recovery, while Kyle Gallagher contributes 91 stops, 1.5 sacks, a pick and a fumble recovery.
