Holidays In Spain And The Country’s Love Affair With Football

Given the country’s obsession with football, it’s hardly surprising that so many like-minded Brits adore holidays in Spain. Many regions throughout the country are football-obsessed, and even the most uninterested of sports fans can name the top Spanish teams (for those living under a rock, they’re Real Madrid and FC Barcelona).

The sport was, unsurprisingly, introduced to the Spanish by the British, in the late 19th century, however it wasn’t until the early 1900s that the sport really began to take off in Spain. Real Madrid is the most popular team in the whole country, with a whopping 32% of the population supporting the capital’s team. Originally called simply Madrid Football Club, the ‘Real’ (‘royal’) moniker was bestowed upon the team in 1920 by King Alfonso VIII.

Cheap holidays to Spain are often popular with football fans, particularly those who attend the famous Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the home ground of Real Madrid.

The second most favoured team in the country is FC Barcelona. Its location in the well-loved area of Catalonia means that trips to the amazing Camp Nou stadium (Barcelona’s 96,000 capacity home ground) are a regular feature on many people’s holidays in Costa Dorada.

The other most-supported teams in Spain are Atletico Madrid, Seville FC, Valencia CF, and Deportivo La Coruña. To give you an indication of just how football obsessed the Spanish are, let’s finish on a statistic.

Between 2010 and 2011, 11,039,808 supporters attended La Liga matches. This is 1.5 million more than those who attended Football League Championship matches in the whole of England and Wales. And they say the UK is football crazy – we’ve got nothing on the obsession and fever that grips the Spaniards when it comes to ‘the beautiful game’!

Carlos Tevez Returns to Manchester City in a humvee – /football

Carlos Tevez returns from Argentina to Manchester City

Carlos Tevez is back at Manchester City after returning from unauthorised leave in his native Argentina.

“He pulled up in his black Hummer about 1645 GMT. A few minutes after the hour-long medical, he stopped at the gates to sign some autographs. I asked him if it was good to be back. He nodded and drove off”

BBC Radio 5 live reporter Steve Blears at Manchester City’s training ground

The 28-year-old met a club doctor at City’s training ground on Tuesday for tests to establish his fitness.

Tevez and his family were met by a large media pack at Manchester Airport after arriving from Buenos Aires.

The striker has not played since manager Roberto Mancini accused him of refusing to come off the bench against Bayern Munich on 27 September.

Tevez will return to Carrington for training on Wednesday but will not travel with the first team to Portugal for City’s Europa League tie with FC Porto on Thursday.

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott said on Twitter : “All the players are excited to have Carlos, Kolo [Toure] and Yaya [Toure] back to help achieve our goal.”

Tevez has not been in Manchester since flying back to South America on 7 November without City’s permission.

City fined Tevez £1.2m for refusing to return from Argentina and they have not paid his £200,000-a-week salary since he has been there.

On Monday, Tevez told Argentine broadcaster Fox Sports that Mancini treated him “like a dog” in the incident that sparked their rift.

In the immediate aftermath of the touchline row in Munich, Mancini said Tevez was “finished” at City.

He was linked with moves to Inter Milan, AC Milan and Paris St Germain during the transfer window but nothing materialised.

Earlier this month Mancini named the Argentine in their 25-man squad for the remainder of the season.

Purdue rates 65th in the nation in points allowed (26 ppg), allowing 389 yards per game (203 through the air, 186 on the ground) while totaling 21 sacks and enticing 14 turnovers – two of which converted to touchdowns (Brandon Taylor, fumble recovery; Ricardo Allen, interception).

2011 Holiday Bowl Preview

The Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences meet up in San Diego Dec. 28 in the second of two San Diego bowl matchups. California ended the regular season playing well, while the Longhorns have staggered to the finish line, but both squads played quality football to be invited to this bowl game. This will be a chance to end the season on a good note when they clash in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.

The latest Holiday Bowl line list Texas as a 3-point favorite, while the total has been listed at 47.5 points.

The Golden Bears enter this meeting on a decent run, having came out on top in three of their final four games, with the only blip a 31-28 defeat to top-10 Stanford. Recently, the Bears won at Arizona State, 47-38, to finish fourth in the Pac-12 North (4-5) and finish with a 2-4 mark away from home.
